To promote peace, Ukraine’s allies must make Putin understand that he cannot dictate the terms of how the war will end. This can be achieved by building global support for a peace agreement based on international law, strengthening Ukraine’s position on the battlefield, providing long-term security guarantees, and outlining a clear path to NATO accession.
While Putin aims to prolong the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is actively seeking a sustainable peace. He has gathered representatives from over 90 countries to support his ten-point peace formula, which includes addressing the conflict’s environmental impact and strengthening nuclear safety.
Global pressure is crucial in reaching a peace agreement, but strong security guarantees are also necessary for lasting peace. Given Russia’s disregard for international law and human rights, peace cannot solely rely on Putin’s promises. The outcome of the war will depend on Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.
The immediate priority is to improve Ukraine’s position on the battlefield. As Russian missiles and drones continue to kill civilians, Ukraine has the right to use long-range weapons and enter Russian territory to prevent further attacks. Limiting their ability to do so is like asking them to fight with one arm tied behind their back. Ukrainian forces have proven their ability to use Western-supplied weapons effectively and responsibly, and it is time for allies to lift any remaining restrictions on the types of weapons and their usage.
In addition to immediate support, Ukraine’s allies must commit to providing military equipment and financial resources for as long as needed. Ukraine has already received long-term security guarantees from over 30 countries, but more support is needed to ensure its defense.
