**Ukraine’s Top Military Psychiatrist Detained**
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has arrested the country’s chief psychiatrist for the Armed Forces. The official, suspected of making over $1 million through illicit means, was detained on January 21.
The charges claim that since Russia’s invasion in 2022, the psychiatrist acquired many assets without declaring them. These include a house in Kyiv Oblast, apartments in Kyiv and Odesa, luxury cars, and plots of land.
The suspect also works as the deputy head of Ukraine’s central medical commission. This committee decides whether potential recruits are fit to serve in the military. The role is crucial in ensuring that only suitable individuals join the army.
This arrest comes as Ukraine’s defense and health ministries promise to reform the enlistment process by 2025. They aim to stop corruption and make the system more efficient.
In June last year, journalists discovered that a family connected to the ex-head of the Odesa Oblast military enlistment office had bought property worth $4.5 million since the start of the war. This raised questions about corruption within Ukraine’s enlistment facilities.
