Alyona Hétmanchuk, a Ukrainian expert, urges guarantees that will ensure Ukraine’s safety against future Russian aggression.
Alyona Hetzmanchuk, Director of the New Europe Center at UNIAN, stated that the capitulation of Ukraine, would mean “peace”, through the Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, not Donald Trump. This is not in the interests of the newly-elected US president.
Trump claimed repeatedly during the US election that he could end war “in 24 hour,” but details about his plan are scarce. Recent reports suggest that his approach could involve freezing the conflict along current frontlines and establishing demilitarized zones, pressing Ukraine to make territorial concessions, and delaying NATO for at least twenty years.
A ceasefire along the front lines could, however, allow Russia to regroup, strengthen its positions and potentially lead to more violence. A deal may not be honored due to Russia’s history of violating international agreements. It wants to take over all of Ukraine, and not just the separate regions.
Hetmanchuk points out that it’s unclear what Donald Trump envisions as the end of the conflict in Ukraine.
“His team has made statements about freezing the conflict. Hetmanchuk said that the question is whether Ukraine can be guaranteed security, either through NATO or military mechanisms which will protect us in a vulnerable phase and prevent Russia launching a more aggressive attack within a year or few years.
The expert stressed that this goal could not be achieved in 24 hours as it would require agreements leading to a fair, sustainable peace.
Hetmanchuk noted that the concept “peace through power” is popular among the Republican Party members, though not all of them support it.
“If Trump accepts the concept, we need to make it clear that Ukraine’s surrender–giving Putin all he wants, without providing Ukraine with continued military aid or the opportunity for Ukraine to develop as a European State–would mean peace by Putin’s strength and not Trump’s. This is not in Trump’s interest,” Hetmanchuk said.
Donald Trump, a Republican, will return to the White House after securing the necessary electoral vote. Donald Trump announced his victory in the US Presidential election in an address to supporters in Florida a few hours later. In his speech, Trump declared his intention to end wars, including that in Ukraine.
