Ukrainian court sentences hackers who committed over 5,000 cyberattacks against Russia

The State of Ukraine (SBU) announced on October 8 that a Ukrainian court had sentenced in absentia, two members of “Armageddon”, backed by the Russian Security Service (FSB), for carrying out more than 5,000 hacker attacks against Ukrainian institutions and critical Infrastructure.
Russian hackers have targeted Ukrainian government institutions and businesses with crippling cyberattacks to disrupt numerous industries and government services.
The SBU stated that the unnamed hackers were previously employed by the SBU in occupied , before voluntarily joining FSB after Russia’s annexation in 2014.
Hackers primarily targeted internal systems of various ministries, such as the Foreign and the Economic Development Ministry. They gained access to sensitive document-management systems, as well servers with data about classified government structures.
The data breaches did not provide any additional information about the type of information that was stolen.
The hackers were charged with treason and illegally breaching computer systems under Ukraine’s Criminal Code.
The hackers were sentenced 15 years in prison. The sentence began when the hackers were in Ukrainian custody.
It is not clear if the hacker continues to conduct cyberattacks on Ukraine.
Ukrainian and Western intelligence agencies warned on September 5 that the notorious GRU Unit 29155, of Russia’s military spy agency (GRU), continues to carry out cyberattacks against critical infrastructure in NATO countries and countries.
