In a recent case against Russia before the International Tribunal at The Hague, Ukraine called for the demolition the Kerch Bridge, citing violations in maritime law and environmental concerns. Ukrinform received comments from a Ukrainian diplomat on the case.
The occupied Crimea is Russia’s military base. It serves as a springboard to launch Russian offensives against Ukraine’s southern mainland. This consolidates Russian forces and enhances operational capabilities. Russia built the Kerch road bridges and railway bridges between 2017 and 2020 to link its Taman Peninsula with occupied Crimea. This was to secure a vital logistics route to the occupied area.
Anton Korynevych (Ambassador-at-Large of Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs) made a comment on Ukrinform, 6 October, in which he emphasized that the Kerch Bridge “needs to cease to exist”. He stated:
