SBU detained a 22-year-old soldier suspected of state treason after he allegedly provided Russian artillery coordinates for his own drone unit located in Donetsk Oblast.
A 22-year old soldier has been arrested by Ukrainian authorities on suspicion of state treachery for allegedly giving Russian forces the location of his unit during the Battle for Chasiv Yar, in Donetsk Oblast. The Security Service of Ukraine and the Office of the Prosecutor General both announced the arrest on 15 October.
Despite the ongoing Russo–Ukrainian conflict, Russian espionage, sabotage and sabotage in Ukraine continue to be a significant threat. The SBU regularly dismantles spy networks, which are often coordinated by Russian FSB agencies and GRU agencies. The networks are often made up of Ukrainian citizens who gather information on critical infrastructure and defense positions in exchange for financial rewards.
Investigators claim that Dmitry Sorokoletov (an officer of Russia’s Federal Security Service, FSB) recruited the suspect remotely in 2023. The suspect was a drone operator with a combat brigade of Armed Forces of Ukraine defending Kramatorsk. The SBU claims the soldier leaked positions of his UAV, which was responsible to coordinate fire against Russian forces attacking Chasiv Yar.
Authorities claim that the Russian invaders planned to use this information in order to target Ukrainian drone operators who were blocking their advance on the town. The suspect allegedly also tried to give the FSB coordinates for other Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Chasiv Yar region.
The law enforcement officials claim that the man was brought to the attention of occupying forces through his pro Kremlin comments on Russian Telegram channels where he expressed his support for Russia’s conflict against Ukraine. During the search of the detained soldiers, mobile phones that contained evidence of his work with the enemy were found.
The suspect is currently in custody and has been charged with state treason. If convicted, the suspect could face life in prison.
The Ukrainian authorities have issued evacuation orders due to the intensified shelling. The ongoing Russian bombardments are preventing evacuation efforts and leaving many civilians in dangerous conditions.
