**Ukraine’s Electricity Supplies Remain Stable**
Despite threats from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to cut electricity supplies, Ukraine’s energy experts say the country can maintain stable imports through existing connections with Poland, Hungary, and Romania.
**No Serious Threats to Ukraine**
Fico threatened to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine after the country decided not to extend Russian gas transit through its territory. However, Ukrainian energy experts say this move will have minimal impact on Ukraine’s power grid.
**Compensating for Disruptions**
Ukraine can easily compensate for any potential disruptions in Slovak electricity supplies by using other connections with Poland, Hungary, and Romania. In fact, the country’s current power import infrastructure allows it to receive up to 2.1 GW of electricity from the European Union through a diversified network.
**Industry Experts Weigh In**
According to Oleksandr Kharchenko, Director of the Energy Research Center, Slovakia will likely lose money if it stops supplying electricity to Ukraine, but this will not have a significant impact on Ukraine’s power grid. Industry sources confirmed that Ukraine’s current setup ensures that if one supply route becomes unavailable, the remaining three countries can compensate for the shortfall.
**Background**
Ukraine decided not to extend Russian gas transit through its territory after 1 January 2025. This move was made in response to Russia’s ongoing destruction of Ukrainian energy infrastructure and threats to national security. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has emphasized that allowing Russian gas transit would enable Moscow to profit from the war and undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.
