Ukrainian military officials have reported that Russian forces suffer approximately 1,300 casualties each day.
According to the General Staff of Ukraine, Russian losses in Ukraine have exceeded 700,000 casualties since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. This includes both killed and injured personnel.
The high casualty rate is a reflection of a Russian strategy that involves heavy infantry attacks, often referred to as “meat-grinder” tactics. This strategy has resulted in substantial losses as Russia attempts to gain territory in eastern Ukraine. Despite these challenges Russia continues to recruit approximately 30,000 new soldiers per month in order to sustain its military operation against Ukraine
The General Staff of Ukraine reported that Russian forces had lost an additional 1,300 men in the previous 24 hour period.
The material losses reported include more than 9,000 tanks, 18500 armored vehicle, and over 20,000 artillery system. The General Staff’s figures also show that Russia’s air force has suffered significant losses, with 369 helicopters and 369 aircraft destroyed since the beginning of the war.

The Times of India reported on 28 October that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had told the newspaper that Russia lost approximately 650,000 military personnel in Ukraine.
In July, Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said that Russian losses were three times greater than Ukrainian losses.
British Defense Ministry intelligence confirmed these claims of high Russian losses, reporting that September saw a record average daily loss of 1,271 Russians.
The Wall Street Journal cited US analysts who described September 2024 as being the deadliest month in the conflict for Russian forces, with approximately 1,200 daily casualties.
Ukrainian losses
Zelenskyy revealed on 25 February that during the two-year war, 31,000 Ukrainian military personnel were killed. He refused to reveal the number wounded personnel due to strategic reasons.
Before these disclosures, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense maintained a policy of keeping the casualty numbers classified until the end of the martial law.
