According to Ukraine’s military intelligence, Russian forces intensify surveillance in occupied territories by blocking entire districts, allowing them to identify residents who access restricted internet sites.
Currently, the Russians are attempting to track every instance of Ukrainian citizens using internet resources or messaging apps banned by the occupation authorities–sometimes blocking entire districts to identify such users, reports Andrii Cherniak, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense (HUR), as per Ukrinform.
“There are some cases where they arrest and imprison everyone after blocking entire districts for accessing a social network. They then try to determine the person who accessed the Internet, what information they transmitted or received,” said the official.
Cherniak claims that Russian forces have reprogrammed Ukrainian internet and mobile devices in occupied territory for surveillance.
“When the occupiers took over these territories, they stole this equipment and reprogrammed, now using it as theirs. Cherniak explained that all of this is done in order to maintain a total control and surveillance on the residents of occupied territories.
The intelligence representative also stated, among other Russian tactics, the creation of fake pages to lure citizens is one of them.
The HUR official said that the occupiers were trying to create fake accounts and information resources that looked like those of the Main Intelligence Directorate in the hope people would visit them, so the occupation authorities could track them down and arrest them.
Cherniak urged Ukrainian patriots to remain vigilant in occupied territory and highlighted that anyone who wishes to support Ukraine can make use of secure contact options and guidelines on the official resources available from the Main Intelligence Directorate.
