Russian forces in Ukraine are using more drones and artillery to gain territory. They are also sending small groups of soldiers into battle.
The Russian army is now using twice as many drones as before, says Vladyslav Voloshyn, a Ukrainian military spokesperson. These drones are used for reconnaissance and attacks on Ukrainian positions. The Russians are also firing more artillery shells than before, almost doubling the number they were previously using.
The Russian goal is to capture the southern part of Donetsk Oblast and reach the border with Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. To achieve this, they are sending in small groups of soldiers using motorcycles, cars, and even electric scooters. These tactics allow them to break through Ukrainian defenses and capture about one village per day.
However, these tactics come at a heavy cost for Russia. Many of their soldiers are being killed or captured. Despite the losses, the Russian army is able to make daily gains in southern Ukraine.
The use of small groups and drones has allowed Russia to adapt to Ukraine’s defense strategies. The Ukrainian military had previously been effective against large-scale attacks. But now, they are struggling to defend against these smaller, more agile attacks.
