After a fire was put out in a nearby training facility, the war in Ukraine entered a brand new phase on Saturday.
Both sides agreed that Russian forces control Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar (Ukraine) but both blamed each other for the fire.
Ukrainian officials reported that no increase in radiation levels was detected and the plant’s operations were being monitored by its personnel. The Russian defense ministry stated that the plant was operating normally.
In a video message, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alleged that Russia was using “nuclear terrorism.”
Zelensky urged Europe to “wake-up” and said that Russia wanted to replicate the Chernobyl catastrophe of 1986.
Russia continues to intensify its hostilities and move forward in southern Ukraine. After occupying Kherson, Russia’s forces are now approaching the port of Mariupol.
Ben Wallace, Secretary of Defense for the United Kingdom, said that the Russian Federation was “lagging behind” the plan.
On Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken departed for Eastern Europe to meet with NATO allies as well as other European leaders regarding the Ukraine issue.
More than a half a million people have fled Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, which was started by Russia. In talks on March 3, Russia and Ukraine agreed to create “humanitarian corridors” for the evacuation of civilians.
