Denys Shmyhal, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, said that he was cautiously optimistic regarding the continued support from the United States under Donald Trump. He also expected “clear and swift steps” to be taken by the new leadership.
Shmyhal told the Kyiv Economic Forum that “Donald Trump was a strong leader. There is no doubt about it.”
Former President Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. Presidential election on November 5, with a large margin. Trump will now be inaugurated as president-elect on Jan. 20, 2020.
The Republican nominee’s victory spells uncertainty for Ukraine, as Trump has criticised military aid to Kyiv and stated that he intends “to get out” of the conflict.
Shmyhal believes there is a continued bipartisan support of Ukraine in both the U.S. Congress as well as the American society. This provides grounds for “careful optimistic.” The Republican Party has not only won the White House, but also the Senate. However, the House elections are still in the balance.
The prime minister emphasized President Volodymyr Zelensky’s phone call with Trump following the election. Ukraine’s head-of-state described it as an “excellent telephone conversation.”
Ukrainian officials tried to put a positive spin Trump’s win, expecting “peace through power” and invoking the memories of Ronald Reagan, a former U.S. Republican President known for his hawkish stance towards Moscow.
“We understand that America’s core value is to protect democracy, to protect democratic values. Shmyhal said that this remains unchanged regardless of the election results.
“I’m sure we can continue to work with the United States.”
