**Ukrainian Soldiers at Risk of Encirclement Near Velyka Novosilka**
Ukrainian troops near the village of Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk Oblast are at risk of being surrounded by Russian forces. Military spokesperson Viktor Trehubov said this on January 23.
Russian forces are trying to take control of roads leading to the village, using heavy fire. This makes it difficult for Ukrainian soldiers to defend themselves, according to Trehubov.
The situation is complicated by a river that runs through the village and the large number of Russian troops in the area. “They have many more people,” said Trehubov.

**Casualties and Arrests**
Russian forces have suffered 1,340 casualties over the past day, according to Ukraine’s military intelligence chief. Ukrainian prosecutors are investigating a case of Russian troops summarily executing six Ukrainian captives in Donetsk Oblast.
A 47-year-old man was killed in an attack on January 22, Governor Ivan Fedorov said. Regional authorities reported at least two people were killed and 46 injured over the past day, including an infant.
