It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Nick Beresford, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in . The UNDP shared this heartbreaking news on social media today.

We are grateful to the dedicated doctors and medical staff at the Aleksander Aladashvili Clinic in Tbilisi, who worked tirelessly to save Nick’s life.

Nick Beresford will always be remembered in Georgia as an exceptional individual who combined professionalism with a clever and self-deprecating sense of humor. He was a rare person in the UNDP, with qualifications in auditing, economics, and English , which he used to provide exceptional leadership.

His unwavering commitment to upholding UN values for all people had a profound impact on the UNDP’s work. He was a strong advocate for rights, particularly for the LGBTQI community in challenging environments. He believed in delivering tangible results to those in need, and he found joy in visiting and communities whose lives were transformed by the UNDP’s work.

During his two years in Georgia, Nick earned the trust and respect of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness and humility touched the hearts of the entire UNDP Georgia team.

The grief at his passing is felt globally, from Tbilisi to the entire UNDP family and the many places where he served during his two decades of UN work: Cambodia, Bangladesh, Somalia, Timor, and New . In life, Nick was a friend and role model to many, and in death, his legacy will inspire us to love one another and work towards creating a better world for all.
