UNESCO Protects Cultural Sites

The Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added two important cultural sites in its list of protected areas. This decision was announced by the Culture Ministry on December 12.

Two Important Sites Protected

One site is Babyn Yar, a place where nearly 34,000 Jews were killed by Nazi forces near in September 1941. Many other people, including prisoners of war and Romani people, also lost their lives there. The other site is the Literary Museum.

Damage to Cultural Sites

The historic center of Odesa has been damaged by missile strikes. This includes an attack on July 2023 that hurt over 20 architectural monuments and badly damaged the Transfiguration Cathedral.

Many Cultural Sites Damaged

Since ‘s invasion began, the Culture Ministry has recorded 1,222 cases of damage to sites. These include religious buildings, museums, and other important places. UNESCO has confirmed that 457 sites have been damaged as of October 21.
