US Congressman Mike Turner urges NATO lift restrictions on Ukrainian attacks into Russian territory and to consider direct action against North Korean troops in Ukraine.
According to Voice of America, US Congressman Mike Turner says that the US and NATO should allow Ukraine strike deep into Russia as a response to North Korean troops deployment.
North Korea has provided Moscow with approximately two million artillery shells and at least 11 000 ammunition containers since 2023, during the ongoing RussoUkrainian War. South Korean intelligence reports also claim that Pyongyang sent 3,000 troops to Russia and plans to send 10,000 by December. The Ukrainian military claims that the first North Korean units have arrived in Russia’s Kursk Oblast battle zone after training on Russia’s eastern grounds.
In response to North Korea’s sending troops to support occupiers, Congressman Mike Turner of the House Intelligence Committee stated that the US, along with other NATO countries, should give Ukraine the ability to strike targets deep inside Russia.
Turner also advocates “direct attacks” on North Korean troops if they’re detected on Ukrainian territory.
“At the moment, the US has a policy that prohibits Ukraine from using NATO and US-supplied weaponry to attack legitimate military targets in Russia. Turner noted that, for example, if Russia attacks Ukraine from Russian soil with a military system, Ukraine is not allowed to respond by using US or local systems in order to target the system.
Turner said that the US administration views any Ukrainian strikes on Russian soil as a provocation. He argues, however, that “Russia’s first attack should be considered the provocation.” Turner previously stated that North Korean troops involvement in the war with Ukraine should be a red line for NATO and the US.
Turner said that Ukraine’s allies shouldn’t rule out an attack against North Korean soldiers, if they were actively deployed in the conflict.
The official said, “I think that the US and NATO should seriously discuss and consider a targeted attack on North Korean forces in Ukraine if they’re present.”
Turner said that North Korean troops had no place in Europe and should not be attacking any European country.
The congressman also emphasized that it was in NATO’s best interest to prevent Asian troops, especially communists from North Korea, from marching through Europe.
