The US Embassy in Georgia has released a press release on recent arrests in Tbilisi of peaceful demonstrators.
The Embassy said it is closely monitoring those arrested and detained for peacefully protesting in front of the Parliament on June 2.
“The right to peaceful assembly and freedom to expression are core human and fundamental rights.
“A lack of tolerance of dissent is inconsistent the values of the Euro Atlantic family of nations to which the majority of Georgians wish to belong,” reads the declaration.
On the evening of 2 June, several incidents occurred near the Parliament where the peaceful action organized the “Stubborn movement” was taking place. When the police arrested the protestors, they were sitting on the stairs holding posters.
In this context, representatives from non-governmental organisations joined those who had gathered near parliament with posters in their hands. The police began arresting the protesters soon after. On the footage, you can see how the security forces are attacking and detaining the rally participants.
According to reports from non-governmental organisations, among those arrested were Eduard Marikashvili – the chairman of Democratic Initiative of Georgia, Saba Brachveli – an employee of Open Society Foundation, Nika Romanadze – a activist, and others.
