**Russia Ordered to Pay $34 Million**
A US court has ruled that Russia must face a lawsuit from 11 Ukrainian gas companies. The companies are trying to enforce an arbitration award of $34 million.
The dispute started when Russia invaded Crimea. Ukraine’s largest oil and gas company, Naftogaz, took Russia to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. The court ordered Russia to pay compensation for expropriated assets in Crimea.
Russia appealed this decision, but Dutch courts have now confirmed it twice. This means that Russia must face a lawsuit from the 11 Ukrainian gas companies seeking to enforce the $34 million arbitration award.
**US District Judge Makes Ruling**
On December 17, US District Judge Trevor N. McFadden made the ruling. The judge said that Russia is not immune to this lawsuit. This means that the Russian government cannot avoid paying the $34 million.
The case is significant because it shows that Russia’s actions in Crimea have consequences. Ukraine and its allies are seeking to hold Russia accountable for its actions.
