**US Refuses to Co-Sponsor UN Resolution Condemning Russia**
The US is not supporting a United Nations resolution marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The resolution condemns Moscow’s aggression and reaffirms Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
This is unusual for the US, which has co-sponsored similar resolutions in previous years. Without US support, the resolution may have trouble getting approval from the UN General Assembly.
The US also disagreed with a G7 statement that called Russia the “aggressor” in the war against Ukraine. This was reported by the Financial Times on February 20.
**US Diplomatic Efforts**
In recent days, US President Donald Trump‘s administration has been trying to engage with Russia. A US delegation met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Saudi Arabia on February 18.
However, Trump has made some confusing statements about Ukraine. He called the country’s president a “dictator” and falsely accused him of not holding elections. In fact, Ukraine’s constitution says that elections cannot be held during martial law, which is still in effect since Russia invaded in 2022.
**Ukraine’s Wartime Expenses**
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on February 19 that his country has spent $320 billion on the war. The US and EU have provided a combined $200 billion to support Ukraine’s military efforts.
The statements by Trump have caused concern in Kyiv and among European allies about Washington’s stance on the war.
