Five Republican senators from the United States visited Hungary from October 3-5 and expressed concerns about the country’s growing ties with Russia and increasing cooperation with China. The delegation included Jerry Moren, John Boozman, Susan Collins, John Cornyn, and John Goven. In a statement issued by U.S. Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman, Senator Jerry Moren emphasized the delegation’s worries about Hungary’s expanding relations with Russia and the erosion of its democratic institutions. The statement also called for closer alignment between Hungary and its allies, stating that it is in the common interests of both countries to cooperate closely. The senators urged Hungary to listen to the warnings of its allies and respond to them.

In July, Orban went on a “peace tour” and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. These visits sparked criticism from the EU and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
