**US Sanctions Russian Entity Running Occupied Nuclear Plant**
The US Treasury Department has sanctioned a Russian company that took control of Ukraine‘s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The plant, located in the partially occupied oblast, was captured by Russian forces in March 2022.
The sanctions target Vladislav Isaev, the CEO of the Russian entity since April 2024. In October 2022, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree to oversee the captured power plant, following an order from President Vladimir Putin who declared the facilities as Russian federal property.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear station is Europe’s largest and has been occupied by Russian forces since March 2022. The occupation has led to repeated disconnections from the Ukrainian power grid due to attacks on energy infrastructure. The region, including the city of Zaporizhzhia and areas around the plant, have faced regular missile strikes, artillery shelling, and drone attacks.
On January 8, Russian forces targeted an industrial facility in Zaporizhzhia, killing one person and injuring at least 30, according to State Emergency Service. The US Treasury’s sanctions aim to prevent the Russian entity from operating freely and to reduce the risk of a nuclear disaster at the plant.
