US Senators Speak Out Against Violence in Georgia
The US Helsinki Commission has issued a joint statement condemning the violence against peaceful protesters in Tbilisi, Georgia. The statement was signed by three senators: Ben Cardin, Roger Wicker, and John Cornyn.
They are angry about the Georgian government’s decision to give up on joining the European Union. According to them, this move is a betrayal of what most Georgians want. They believe that the government should be promoting democratic reforms and respecting people’s rights, not trying to become like Russia’s autocratic regime.
The senators strongly condemn the violence against protesters. This includes police using tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, beating people, and arresting them in large numbers. They think this is unacceptable behavior by the Georgian authorities.
These senators believe that those responsible for human rights abuses should be held accountable by both their own people and the international community. They want to show solidarity with the Georgian people who are working towards joining Europe and are willing to take risks to achieve it.
