US Keeps Military Personnel in Europe Safe from Russian Threats
The United States has promised to protect its military personnel in Europe. This comes after Russia made threats against a new US missile defense base in Poland.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said on November 21 that the NATO anti-missile base in Poland is a target for attack. She called it a “provocative step” and accused the US of showing off its military power in other countries. Russia has been making these threats since the US allowed Ukraine to use Western-made missiles to strike targets inside Russia.
US National Security Spokesperson John Kirby said that Washington takes Russia’s threats seriously. He assured that the US will do everything necessary to keep American forces safe in Europe. Kirby also reaffirmed the US’s commitment to a NATO rule, which says member countries must help each other if one is attacked.
When asked about Ukraine using long-range missiles, Kirby explained that they are mainly used for self-defense. He said it’s up to Ukraine to explain how and why they’re being used.
Poland has also spoken out against Russia’s threats. The Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed that the base in Poland is defensive and only meant to protect against ballistic missile threats.
If Russia continues making threats, the US and NATO might need to strengthen air defenses along their eastern flank, according to a Polish official.
