On October 25, Ukrainian world boxing champ Oleksandr Usyk urged Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin of the need to release the defenders at the Azovstal Steel Plant.
The POWs, which included soldiers from the Azov Regiment and other units, became a symbolic symbol of Ukraine’s Resistance through their tenacious defence of the Azovstal Plant in Mariupol during the first three months after the war began.
Russian forces finally took Mariupol in 2022. Kyiv had given an order to save their lives.
Olena Tolkachova said on national TV in September that there are still 700 Azov fighters in Russian captivity.
Usyk has asked Joe Rogan, an American podcaster, to pass along his appeal to Trump, the former U.S. President and Republican Presidential nominee.
“If Mr. president is so confident of his influence over Putin, would he be able to help free Azovstal Defenders and all Ukrainians right away from Russian captivity? Usyk wrote in X that “time is of the essence.”
Trump had said earlier that he “(got along) very well” with Putin during his presidency. This implied that the Russian leader frequently talked about his desire to control Ukraine.
The comments came just two weeks before the U.S. Presidential election, which will likely determine Washington’s support of Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that he will end the war with Russia in “24 hours”, without explaining how he intends to do it. Trump’s inner circle has made some statements and reports that suggest this could mean pressuring Ukraine to cede land or give up its NATO ambitions.

Around 9 p.m. local, an air alert was sounded for Kyiv and other oblasts in Ukraine due to a massive Russian drone attack. This has been happening almost daily in Ukraine for the past month.
