Saidov said that Kazakhstan had not benefited from its membership in the EAEU, either. It would be “optimal” if Uzbekistan remained in observer status, and maintained its independence and sovereignty.
Uzbekistan stated that it would not recognize the proxy authorities of Donetsk and Luhansk, and would support Ukraine’s territorial integrity at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Tashkent is still actively trading with Moscow and the Uzbek leadership maintains close ties to the Russian leadership.
On May 26, Putin visited Uzbekistan’s capital to discuss the strengthening of bilateral relations with President Shavkat Miziyoyev. This was Putin’s third trip abroad since he was inaugurated for his fifth presidential term in March, which he won through a widely regarded rigged election.
