Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, in an interview with CBS News published on October 27, dismissed calls to take action against Russia’s latest attempts to meddle in U.S. election.
U.S. intelligence warned Russia was using disinformation to undermine Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in the run-up to the presidential election on Nov. 5.
Vance, running mate to Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump, has been a vocal critic of aid to Kyiv, as Ukraine faces a full-scale invasion by Russia.
“I believe that many countries will try to manipulate our electorate. They’re going try to manipulate our election. Vance told CBS News that’s what they did.
A fake video circulated on the internet showing votes for Trump being torn by a man from Pennsylvania, a key swing state. The video was posted by an anonymous X-account with a track record of spreading Russian misinformation.
“I can tell them (Moscow), to stop, but this isn’t a schoolyard,” Vance stated.
Later, U.S. officials confirmed that Russia was behind this fake video. They were trying to undermine confidence in upcoming elections.
Vance also criticised sanctions imposed on Russia. He said, “They have gone off like wet firecrackers.”
In a second interview that same day, Vance referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “competitor”, or “adversary”, to the U.S. and said that negotiations with Moscow were “a necessary part” in ending the war.
Vance’s remarks come just a little over a week before the U.S. Presidential election, which has high stakes in the future of American support for Ukraine.

In a debate with the incumbent president on October 27, Alexandr Stoianoglo, a candidate for the Moldovan presidency, claimed that he would continue to support Ukraine. This statement was dismissed by Maia Sandu.
