European Union’s Statement on Mzia Amaghlobeli Confuses Georgian Dream MP
A statement from the European Union about solidarity with Mzia Amaghlobeli has left a high-ranking official confused. Vladimer Bozhadze, a member of the ruling party in Georgia, made these comments to journalists.
Bozhadze advised Mzia Amaghlobeli, the founder of “Batumelebi,” to end her hunger strike. He said she can defend herself and the truth in court.
The statement from the European Union was about showing solidarity with Mzia Amaghlobeli and asking for her immediate release. It mentioned that freedom of the press and a fair trial are important values in Europe.
Bozhadze is not sure what the EU means by its statement. He said it’s unclear if they plan to punish police officers as well. The MP pointed out that people have been detained for opposing the police before, but there was no reaction from the European Union then.
According to Bozhadze, the European Union should be urging calm and reducing polarization in Georgia instead of contributing to it. He believes that every citizen is protected by law in their country and that Mzia Amaghlobeli has access to proper treatment and conditions while in prison.
