**Ukraine’s President Calls for European Army Amid US Concerns**
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the creation of a “European army” due to growing concerns that the US may no longer come to Europe’s aid. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he said that the old relationship between Europe and America is ending.
**US No Longer Reliable Ally?**
Zelensky stated that US Vice-President JD Vance made it clear that the old relationship was “ending” and Europe needs to adjust to this new reality. This comes after a phone call between Trump and Putin broke nearly three years of silence between Washington and Moscow.
**US and Russia Reaffirm Commitment to Dialogue**
On Saturday, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with Russia’s foreign minister, building on Wednesday’s call between Trump and Putin. The statement said both sides had reaffirmed commitment to restoring dialogue between the two countries.
**Europe Excluded from Peace Talks?**
Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine also stated that Europe would be consulted but not take part in talks between the US and Russia, if and when they happen. This has raised concerns in Ukraine and among European allies.
**Zelensky Blocks Trump-Led Deal**
Ukraine’s President Zelensky also said he had blocked a Trump-led deal that would have given the US access to vast amounts of Ukrainian natural resources because it lacked security guarantees for Kyiv.
**European Army Proposed**
Zelensky called for Europe to create its own military, citing concerns that America might say no to Europe on an issue that threatens it. This concept has been proposed by other leaders, including France’s Emmanuel Macron.
