Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic spoke about US Treasury sanctions against the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS). The US wants Russia to stop being involved with NIS.
President Vucic said he will talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin, American officials, and the Chinese government. He wants Serbia to be seen as a country that is not against Russia. “We’re not hostile to Russia,” he said. “We don’t want to take someone else’s property.”
The US Treasury has imposed sanctions on NIS’ parent company, Gazpromneft. President Vucic met with government officials before this happened. He said the US wants all Russian interests out of NIS.
President Vucic explained that the US is demanding a complete removal of Russian ownership from NIS. This means Russia will have to sell its shares completely, not just reduce them to 49%. The Serbian government must start the process of changing ownership, which needs approval from the US administration and another organization called OFAC.
