Protesters in Georgia Face Brutal Police Response
The Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) has spoken out against the treatment of protesters arrested on December 2. According to eyewitnesses, many of those detained were severely beaten and subjected to inhumane conditions.
The protests have been ongoing since November 28, following a decision by the ruling party Georgian Dream to halt EU accession talks. The situation has seen unprecedented levels of police violence.
GYLA reports that some detainees are currently being treated in a medical facility for their injuries. They describe severe bruising and facial trauma, with many unable to move or speak properly.
Eyewitness accounts from the detainees themselves paint a disturbing picture. They claim to have been beaten mercilessly by multiple police officers, who took turns to target specific areas of their bodies. The superiors are alleged to have given instructions to focus on their livers and heads.
Detainees also recall being spat at, cursed, and threatened with violence. One eyewitness describes a blood-soaked minibus after the beating, and another recalls being taken barefoot to a medical facility.
GYLA has condemned these actions as inhumane and degrading, calling for an immediate investigation into each alleged crime.
