Residents in the northern part of Ukraine‘s Donetsk Oblast will be without water for an indefinite period due to ongoing Russian attacks, according to Governor Vadym Filashkin. The region, which is partially occupied by Russian forces, has been heavily affected by the ongoing war, forcing many residents to flee.
According to Filashkin, the cities of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, and nearby settlements, which are home to approximately 260,000 people, will face water supply issues due to the attacks. Two facilities of the Water of Donbas utility company were damaged beyond repair on Sept. 28, leaving the region without a reliable source of water.
Efforts are being made by the regional military administration and local authorities to establish an alternative water supply, but for now, technical water is being temporarily supplied from a local river reservoir. However, this is not a sustainable solution and the situation remains dire for the affected residents.
The Russian attacks in Donetsk Oblast continue to cause civilian casualties and destroy crucial infrastructure. On Oct. 2 alone, eight people were injured in the region. These attacks are accompanied by a ground offensive focused on several axes, with the latest success being the capture of the front-line town of Vuhledar earlier this week. The situation in Donetsk Oblast remains tense and the residents are facing immense challenges due to the ongoing conflict.
