Weather hampers Ukrainian drones, so Russia switches to mechanized attacks near Kupiansk

Russian forces are taking advantage of bad in Ukraine to launch attacks with tanks and other vehicles. This is making it hard for operators to see what’s happening on the ground.

According to a officer, Russian troops have been using stolen local boats to cross the undetected. They are trying to gain control over the river and the surrounding area of city in eastern Ukraine.

On November 24th, briefly captured some Ukrainian positions near Kupiansk but were driven back by Ukrainian defenders. On December 23rd, a large-scale attack on Ukrainian troops failed, with Russian forces suffering heavy losses.

The bad weather has made it harder for Ukrainian to operate and has resulted in the loss of several (UAVs). The Ukrainian army officer said that previously Russian attacks were mostly carried out by groups without using equipment. But now they are taking advantage of the weather to launch mechanized attacks, which is a more serious threat.

The area around Kupiansk remains a highly contested region with both sides trying to gain control. Ukrainian forces have been able to repel many of these attacks but the situation remains fragile and unpredictable.
