The Foreign Ministers from the Weimar Triangle, France, Germany and Poland, issued a statement on October 10 reaffirming the support they have for the European aspirations held by the Georgians. They also condemned the actions of the Georgian Dream Government, which led to the suspension of Georgia’s EU membership process.
The Foreign Ministers point out that the negative trend since the suspension in Georgia’s EU-accession process has “only gotten worse.” They cite threats of repression and the entry into effect of the Foreign Agents Law. They also mention the adoption of an anti-LGBT bill and attacks against civil society and media representatives. They also note with “growing concern” the GD’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric towards the EU and its member states. The statement states that “the EU will not tolerate Georgian authorities spreading false narratives about European policies and positions.”
The Ministers’ statement is a reiteration of the call for the GD to reverse its current direction, warning that the “scope and depth” of EU-Georgia relationships and cooperation are on the line. They also express their hope that the Georgian Government will recommit itself to implementing the reforms defined since the country was granted the candidate status. “We are ready to continue to support Georgian society in its journey towards a European Future. The statement states that “Our hands remain outstretched.”
The Ministers expect that the Georgian Government will ensure that the elections in October are conducted in a fair and free manner, and to follow the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations. This includes the possibility of an election campaign which is fair and free.
The statement concluded, “We remain committed in strengthening and supporting Georgian sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders.”
