Mark Rutte, the newly appointed secretary-general of Nato, has reiterated the alliance’s support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
He said, “There can’t be lasting security in Europe without an independent, strong Ukraine.”
The former Dutch prime minister took up his position in October 2024. This was three months after the organization celebrated its 75th Anniversary at a special Washington summit.
Nato, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was formed by 12 countries in 1949, including the US and UK, Canada, and France.
The founding treaty of Nato was signed in Washington DC. Leaders of Nato countries celebrated the anniversary of the Washington summit on the first day.
Nato’s external primary purpose was to block the expansion of the Soviet Union in Europe – a grouping of communist countries that included Russia.
