Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has spoken out against attempts to cancel election lists. This is against the law, and he says it’s only for show.
The Prime Minister was speaking in Baku. He was talking about a request from two groups – “Unity of the National Movement” and “Coalition for Change“. They want the Central Election Commission (CEC) to cancel the lists of MPs who were elected on October 31st.
But Kobakhidze says this is impossible before the first meeting of Parliament. He said that when the first session takes place, everyone will know who has been elected as an MP. After that, if someone wants to cancel their list and give up their seat in Parliament, they can do it.
Kobakhidze also said that Parliament doesn’t need the support of the opposition parties. He believes that it’s the people who gave legitimacy to the government and the majority in Parliament. The opposition parties, he says, should be proud of being elected by some citizens. If they refuse their mandates, they will insult their supporters.
The Prime Minister also commented on a statement from Transparency International, which said that the Georgian Parliament can’t meet without an invitation from the President. Kobakhidze dismissed this claim, saying that it’s the Constitution of Georgia that is above all laws and decisions made by the President. He said that anyone who claims otherwise has problems with their qualifications or integrity.
