DPRK sent the soldiers to eastern Russia between early and mid-October 2024. Troops are currently undergoing combat-training, possibly preparing for deployment towards Ukraine.
US officials claim that North Korea has sent at least 3,000 troops to eastern Russia. This is a new level of military co-operation between the two countries.
North Korea has provided Russia with artillery and missiles for its war against Ukraine. According to reports from Ukraine and South Korea, 3,000 North Korean soldiers, including special forces are training in Russia’s Far East. Seoul expects that up to 12,000 troops could follow soon. If deployed in Ukraine, these troops will reinforce Russia’s depleted and continuing losses forces.
John Kirby, the White House’s National Security Communications Advisor, said on 23 Oct that North Korean troops had traveled by ship to Vladivostok in Russia from early-mid October. Kirby said that these forces are stationed in multiple Russian military training facilities in eastern Russia.
