**US Sees No Sign of Russia Preparing to Use Nuclear Weapons**
The US government says it has seen no indication that Russia is planning to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. This was said by White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre on November 21.
Jean-Pierre also spoke about Russia’s new nuclear doctrine, which was approved by President Vladimir Putin on November 19. She called the changes “irresponsible rhetoric” and not a surprise. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the updates were meant to send a signal to the West.
**US Not Changing Its Nuclear Policy**
Jean-Pierre said that despite Russia’s threats, there has been no change in its nuclear posture. The US has also seen no reason to adjust its own nuclear policy or doctrine in response to Russia’s statements.
This is not the first time Russia has made nuclear threats against Ukraine and the West. Since February 2022, when it began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons, but none of these threats have come to pass.
**US Response**
Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh also spoke about Russia’s nuclear policy on November 20. She said that the US sees no change in Russia’s behavior and therefore will not adjust its own nuclear posture.
