The Fall of Assad: A Different Story
While many focus on the potential gas pipelines through Syria to Europe, a more important factor was at play. Russia’s influence in the region was weakening.
Russia helped Bashar al-Assad ten years ago by sending troops to support him. Russia wanted to protect its own gas interests. Two pipeline projects were a threat to Russia’s control of the European gas market:
* A pipeline from Qatar through Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, and Türkiye to Europe would have been a big deal. It would have matched the EU’s plans for more energy from the south.
* Another pipeline from Iran through Iraq and Syria could have sent Iranian gas to Mediterranean ports. From there, it could have been shipped as liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe.
