US Officials Support Georgian Protesters
The US Helsinki Commission leaders have spoken out in support of the people of Georgia. They condemn the violence used against protesters and say the government is not legitimate.
Representative Joe Wilson and Representative Steve Cohen made a joint statement on November 29. They said they stand with the Georgian people as they try to save their democracy and future in Europe.
The protesters took to the streets after the ruling party announced it was suspending its bid to join the EU. The US officials say there is evidence that the ruling party manipulated elections to stay in power.
Wilson and Cohen also claim that the government’s actions are against Georgia’s constitution. They call on the US government to take steps against those responsible for violating protesters’ rights.
