According to a Wall Street Journal article citing European defense ministry officials, Russia has provided satellite intelligence to Yemeni Houthi rebels in order to help them in their attacks against commercial vessels in Red Sea.
The report indicates that satellite data was sent to the Houthis via Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This allowed the militants to “expand their scope of strikes.”
The revelation comes amid ongoing tensions on the Red Sea where Houthi forces have been attacking commercial shipping since 2023. The attacks began as a response to Israel‘s military operation in Gaza. Since November 2023 Houthi militants attacked more than 100 ships. In these attacks, two ships were sunk and one captured.
Previous reports indicated that Russia was also in negotiations with the Houthis about weapons supplies. CNN reports that this weapons transfer has been halted after intensive diplomatic intervention from the United States and Saudi Arabia.
