According to a Kyiv Independent report, the militaries of NATO members states continue to rely upon security principles and weapons that were “inherited from the Korean War”, which will not be relevant for modern warfare. Valerii Zaluzhnyi is the former commander-in chief and current ambassador to Britain.
“There will not be a war like the one of 1953.” I’m talking about the Korean War. It ended in summer of 2023 in Ukraine when two professional armies with more than a milion personnel each faced off on the battlefield,” said the retired general at Chatham House, London.
Zaluzhnyi, who was in charge of Ukraine’s army in 2023 launched a counteroffensive to push toward the Sea of Azov in order to cut Russia’s land corridor into Crimea.
It failed to achieve its goals and was limited to liberating a few villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast and Donetsk, slowed by Russian minefields, a lack of equipment and air superiority.
Since then, the near complete saturation of the frontline with drones and unmanned systems has continued to transform how war is fought.
The ambassador also emphasized that modern warfare has brought new technologies such as drones, artificial intelligence and other battlefield technologies.
Zaluzhnyi stated that it was impossible to produce expensive fighter jets, missiles and aircraft carriers on the “massive” scale that modern warfare demands, which means that these systems will become less effective.
In 1950-53, South Korea and the U.S. engaged in a bloody conflict with North Korea and China. This war led to a ceasefire as well as the division of the country along the line of demarcation that exists today.
In the same speech Zaluzhnyi stated that it is nearly impossible to escape a state of “protracted war” with Russia.
“There will not be a war like the one of 1953.” I’m talking about the Korean War. It ended in summer of 2023 in Ukraine when two professional armies with more than a half million personnel each faced off on the battlefield,” said Valerii Zaluzhnyi. He is the current ambassador to the U.K. and former commander-in chief of Ukraine.
In response to a Kyiv Independent journalist, the Ukrainian ambassador to the U.K. Valerii Zaluzhyni stated that Ukraine needed to change its approach to mobilisation because it still carries Soviet influences. However, much more time was required for a reform to be implemented, he said.
“We end up in a protracted state of war.” In my opinion, a protracted war is almost impossible to end, said Valerii Zaluzhnyi. He was Ukraine’s former commander in chief and newly appointed ambassador to the U.K.
