Zelensky wrote on social media that he talked about strengthening air defenses in Ukraine and ensuring the reliability of peace efforts. He thanked NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other partners for their willingness to help protect Ukrainian skies.

Ukraine needs more air defense systems to protect its critical energy infrastructure, Zelensky said during a press conference on December 18. He called on Western allies to provide an additional 19 air defense systems to the country.
Zelensky also emphasized that Ukraine needs security guarantees, which NATO membership can offer effectively. The country’s application to join NATO was submitted in September 2022, and the alliance has acknowledged Ukraine’s path towards full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership.

During his visit to Brussels, Zelensky said he is discussing ideas with European leaders about deploying European peacekeeping forces to Ukraine. He believes that this could contribute to stabilizing the country on its path to peace.
**Russian Aggression Continues**
Meanwhile, Russia has continued its military aggression in Ukraine. A mass drone attack hit the Kamensky Combine, a chemical plant that produces rocket fuel for the Russian military, early on December 19. Video footage showed the refinery in flames.
The Ukrainian government has been working with international partners to strengthen air defenses and provide humanitarian aid. The United States has pledged $1 billion towards this effort, while other countries have also contributed significant funds.
**Efforts to Strengthen Ukraine**
In response to Russia’s aggression, Ukraine’s allies have doubled down on economic and military support for the country. This includes funding from the United States, as well as a $1.05 billion grant supported by the United Kingdom and Japan.
The European Union has also been working with Ukraine to strengthen its hand before any potential peace talks. Real negotiations will only begin when Russia no longer has the resources to continue the war, according to Ukrainian officials.
**Ukraine’s Military Efforts**
