U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in the Oval Office on February 28, 2025.
The meeting ended with a heated argument between the two leaders over American aid to Ukraine. The planned signing of the US-Ukraine mineral agreement was also cancelled.
After the meeting, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Zelensky “disrespected” the United States in the Oval Office. He said Zelensky is not ready for peace if America is involved, because he feels it gives him an advantage in negotiations.
During a press conference, Trump and Vice President JD Vance were critical of Ukraine’s demand for American aid. They said Ukraine must agree to U.S. peace terms.
Zelensky responded by saying that Ukraine was alone at the start of the war. If America didn’t provide military equipment, the war would have been over in two weeks, he said.
Trump and Vance then said Zelensky should be more thankful for American aid. Zelensky replied that he had thanked the American people.
The argument grew heated, with Trump saying Ukraine isn’t in a good position to set terms for a future agreement. Zelensky responded by saying he’s not playing cards.
Trump shook Zelensky’s hand as they left the press conference. The planned signing of the mineral deal and a press conference were both cancelled.
