Update: President Volodymyr Zelensky met with former U.S. President Donald Trump on Sept. 27 at Trump Tower in New York City. Zelensky has been in the U.S. since Sept. 22, engaging in high-level meetings with foreign leaders, visiting the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant in Pennsylvania, and addressing the U.N. General Assembly.
During his visit, Zelensky also met with current U.S. President Joe Biden and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris to present them with a “victory plan.” This comes as Ukraine faces numerous challenges and ongoing conflict with Russia.
Zelensky emphasized the need to stop the war in Ukraine and discussed his plan for victory with both Trump and Biden. He also noted that Ukraine would be unable to do so until after the U.S. presidential election in November.
Trump acknowledged the difficult situation in Ukraine and expressed his good relations with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, he did not specify how he plans to end the war.
The former president also brought up Zelensky’s involvement in the impeachment inquiry in 2019, where he was accused of pressuring Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden and his son. Recently, Trump’s rhetoric towards Zelensky and U.S. support for Ukraine has become more critical.
Republican leaders have also accused Zelensky of interfering in the election by visiting an ammunition factory in Biden’s hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania. They have demanded that Zelensky fire Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S. and have opened an investigation into the Biden-Harris administration’s alleged misuse of government funds.
In an interview with the New Yorker, Zelensky criticized Trump’s plans for ending the war and called his running mate, Republican Senator J.D. Vance, “too radical.” He also emphasized that the war should not end at Ukraine’s expense.
