**Japan Widens Sanctions on Russia**
The Japanese government has expanded its sanctions list in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The new measures target individuals and entities from Russia, China, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand, Turkey, and North Korea.
**Russian Companies Affected**
Twenty-nine Russian companies, including the Machine-Building Scientific and Production Union and Aleksinsky Chemical Plant, are among those affected by the sanctions. Additionally, 22 more Russian companies and 335 commodity names have been subject to export restrictions. Three banks and 11 individuals from Russia also face sanctions.
**International Reaction**
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine welcomed Japan’s move, saying it is a significant blow to Russia’s military-industrial complex. The United States has also imposed sanctions on Russian companies in response to the invasion.
**Support for Ukraine**
Japan has consistently supported Ukraine in its struggle against Russia’s full-scale invasion. In June 2022, Tokyo announced sanctions against China-based companies over their support for Russian aggression. Japan has also joined international sanctions against Russia and other steps taken against Moscow within the Group of Seven (G7).
