Ukrainian President Zelensky Speaks at World Economic Forum
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on January 21. He urged Europe to take charge of its own security amid growing Russian threats.
Zelensky said that Europe must establish itself as a strong global player. He noted that while the US is an important ally, Washington doubts Europe’s ability to contribute meaningfully to global security. Zelensky highlighted the imbalance in military capabilities between Russia and European countries. For example, he pointed out that Russia can deploy 1.5 million troops compared to Ukraine’s 800,000 and France’s 200,000.
Zelensky called on European nations to unite against Russian aggression. He warned that battles involving North Korean soldiers are now closer to Davos than Pyongyang. He also emphasized the need for Europe to address the disparity in military equipment production between Russia and itself.
The Ukrainian President spoke of growing strategic ties between Russia, Iran, and North Korea. He described these as threats to Europe, the US, and global stability. Zelensky said that Russia is evolving into a state like North Korea, where human life has no value but nuclear weapons and hostility toward neighbors dominate its agenda.
The World Economic Forum in Davos brings together nearly 3,000 representatives from over 130 countries. Discussions on January 21 included European defense strategy, NATO’s future, and Ukraine’s approach to peace through strength. Other high-profile speakers include Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics.
Zelensky’s appearance at the forum follows his attendance in January 2024, which coincided with the fourth meeting on Ukraine’s peace formula. This is a precursor to the global peace summit in Switzerland.
