**Ukraine’s President Willing to Step Down for Peace**
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he is willing to step down as president if it means “peace for Ukraine”. He made this statement on February 23 at the Ukraine: Year 2025 forum in Kyiv.
The Ukrainian government has been under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who accused Zelensky of not wanting to hold elections. However, Zelensky has said that he is focused on security and does not plan to be in power for a long time.
Ukraine has repeatedly said that it will not hold elections until the war with Russia is over. This is because martial law prohibits elections during times of conflict. With Trump pushing for peace negotiations with Russia, many expect an election to follow shortly after a ceasefire is agreed.
**Challenges in Holding Elections**
Many people believe that holding elections during the war is impossible. The Ukrainian government has promised to hold elections “immediately” after the end of the war. A statement from Ukrainian NGOs said that elections should not be held until six months after martial law ends. This would allow for a stable ceasefire, security guarantees, and proper preparations for the election process.
**Public Opinion**
A recent survey found that 69% of Ukrainians believe Zelensky should remain in office until the next elections can be held after the end of martial law. Some opposition politicians have also supported this position, warning against Russian attempts to use elections to divide society.
