According to Zelensky, Ukraine’s military launched a strong operation against the Russian command post on January 31. “They hit their central command post in the Kursk direction,” he said. The strike targeted Russia’s Kursk group of forces in the city of Rylsk.
**Heavy Losses for North Korea**
Zelensky claimed that around 12,000 North Korean troops were deployed to Kursk Oblast by Russia. More than 4,000 of these troops had been lost, he said. The president also stated that Ukraine’s military had “lost the combat capability” of this group of North Koreans.
**Unverified Claims**
The Kyiv Independent could not verify these claims. However, it is known that Ukrainian forces launched a cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast in August 2024, seizing around 1,300 square kilometers of Russian territory. Fighting continues in the area, with Ukraine hoping to use its presence there in potential peace negotiations.
**North Korean Troops Absent**
In recent weeks, North Korean troops have not been seen in areas where Ukrainian Special Operations Forces are fighting. This has led some to speculate that these troops had been pulled from the front lines due to heavy casualties.
