Zelensky, who was speaking at a Kyiv Independent-sponsored meeting, was asked about Pyongyang’s growing support for Moscow. In recent days, it is reported that the support has gone from weapons to boots on ground.
“I think the money is the reason,” he said. “I believe North Korea is poor, so they’ll send their people to front.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a security deal with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, promising to help each other if attacked.
North Korea is now Russia’s largest weapons supplier. With Russia’s stockpiles of military equipment running low, and the country’s production capacity being hampered simultaneously by Western sanctions.
According to reports, Pyongyang has sent Moscow a large number of military items including ballistic missiles and millions artillery shells.
The financial details have not been disclosed, but Russia is said to have provided North Korea, in exchange for the ammunition it has already supplied, with technology that will help it deploy spy satellites, tanks, and aircraft.
Zelensky said that he also believed that North Korean troops would find it difficult to fight effectively for Russia.
He said that “we located officers and technical staff in temporarily occupied territory (of Ukraine),”. He added, “I believe they sent the officers first because their officers would better understand what was happening, and then send a contingent.
