In an interview with ABC News on Sept. 24, President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Russia is using Chinese satellites to gather information on Ukraine’s nuclear facilities. This information could potentially be used for future attacks.
According to Zelensky, Russia has been taking detailed photos of the nuclear facilities using Chinese satellites. He also stated that in the past, when Russia has gathered information on certain objects, it has often led to attacks on those objects.
It is unclear whether the Chinese satellites used were commercial or controlled by the Chinese government. However, Zelensky’s remarks come after warnings from Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who stated that Russia’s potential targets include open distribution devices at nuclear power plants and transmission substations.
Ukraine’s special services have informed their partners and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about this threat. There are currently three operating nuclear power plants in Ukraine, located in the west and south of the country. However, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power station, has been under Russian occupation since March 2022.
The safety of these nuclear facilities is at risk due to Russia’s regular attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been repeatedly disconnected from the Ukrainian power grid, and it is reported that Russian forces are using the occupied territory to deploy military personnel and store ammunition and explosives.
